SPENT CONVICTIONS
A spent conviction absolves an offender of the burden of having a criminal record.
During the sentencing process, submissions can also be made for an offender to receive a spent conviction. The court must be satisfied that the offender was a person of prior good character and not likely to re-offend in the future. It must also be established that a criminal record would have an adverse effect on the offender, usually in terms of securing employment.
